Fun charter off Captiva and North Captiva today … we caught a lot of fish!

We caught the usual assortment of redfish, trout, mackerel, etc.

Also caught a squirrel fish which is a colorful little critter!

Did some serious shelling today.  Hank also spent some time looking for shells in the mangroves.

Also watched a nice sunset off the Sanibel beach.

We have a fishing charter tomorrow, so no more lazy shelling and romping for Hank – it is back to the hard work!

Sharks have become a more prevalent part of charter fishing, I guess “Shark Week” is to blame.

This is great, more and more sharks are being caught each year.  Their numbers seem to be on the rise due to people not killing them out of spite or fear.  This year has been spectacular so far with a decent shark almost guaranteed each trip out.

The three most common species being the black tip, the black nose and the bull shark.  With the weather finally stabilizing sharks should be ready to chew.

The tides early in the week will not likely be as favorable as later in the week, but the best time to go fishing is when ever you can (can’t catch em on the couch).   With slower tide movement earlier in the week, I would concentrate my efforts near the inlets on the beach and bay side.

The best time to target sharks seems to be on a low outgoing tides as the sharks seem to gather in the deeper cuts of the sound and inlets. On the high tides, I would find a deep channel running through a shallow flat where many mullet congregate.

The black nose and black tip sharks are often around large schools of thread fin hearing in the gulf and just inside the inlets.

Bull sharks are often found this time of the year wherever large groups of mullet, juvenile sharks, and sting rays are found.

20 lb class tackle can be used for smaller sharks, but I recommend 50 lb class tackle when tangling with a mature shark.

The lighter the tackle, the longer the fight – and the longer the fight, the less chance of a healthy release. I see this happen all the time.

These larger fish battle to the death.  Do yourself and the fish a favor by using the right equipment to get the job done in an appropriate amount of time.

Windy today.

The weather just will not become stable.

We caught many trout today on fly rods using shiners off Captiva.

Mikey caught a nice black tip and a 70 lb. sting ray.

We got in just in time to clean the fish and the boat and to watch it rain and blow again.

The front came through last night.   When I woke up, the wind was stiff and out of the northeast.

As I suspected would happen, the pressure was high and the fish were full from feeding heavily prior to the weather change.

It was tough fishing but we were able to catch three keeper trout and one snook.  We also caught a sail cat, sometimes known as a gaff top.

Hank had a buddy named Sparkley, and older dachshund, on the boat today.  She stays at Castaways a few times a year.  Hank and Sparkley had a lot of fun!
