The red grouper&#8217;s typical range is coastal areas in the western Atlantic, stretching from southern Brazil to North Carolina in the US and including the Gulf of Mexico.<sup id=\"cite_ref-fccoleman3_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_grouper#cite_note-fccoleman3-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-fccoleman4_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_grouper#cite_note-fccoleman4-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-fccoleman5_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_grouper#cite_note-fccoleman5-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_grouper#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>This demersal, largely sedentary species has an extended (~40 day) pelagic larval stage before it settles in shallow coastal hardbottom habitat as juveniles. While primarily eating benthic invertebrates, the red grouper is an opportunistic feeder in the reef community. The diet commonly includes xanthid and portunid crabs, juvenile spiny lobster, and snapping shrimp, with the occasional fish.<\/p>\n<p>The red grouper is of moderate size, about 125\u00a0cm and weighs 23\u00a0kg or more. Body coloration is typically reddish-brown color often with many white spots. Females transform into males between the ages of 7 and 12.<sup id=\"cite_ref-fccoleman1_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_grouper#cite_note-fccoleman1-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>These characteristics make them highly vulnerable to overfishing.<sup id=\"cite_ref-fccoleman2_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_grouper#cite_note-fccoleman2-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> Refer to the sidebar on the right to see its current conservation status on the IUCN red List.<\/p>\n<p>Red grouper actively excavate pits in the seafloor. This activity increases the architectural complexity of the habitat, which attracts other organisms and increases local biodiversity.<sup id=\"cite_ref-fccoleman_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_grouper#cite_note-fccoleman-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup> They start digging in the sediment from the time they settle out of the plankton and continue throughout their lifetime.
