Archosargus probatocephalus<\/b><\/i>, the\u00a0sheepshead<\/b>, is a marine\u00a0fish<\/a>\u00a0that grows to 76\u00a0cm (30\u00a0in), but commonly reaches 30 to 50\u00a0cm (10 to 20\u00a0in). It is deep and compressed in body shape, with five or six dark bars on the side of the body over a gray background. It has sharp dorsal spines. Its diet consists of\u00a0oysters<\/a>,\u00a0clams<\/a>, and other\u00a0bivalves<\/a>, and\u00a0barnacles<\/a>,\u00a0fiddler crabs<\/a>, and other\u00a0crustaceans<\/a>.[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It has a hard\u00a0mouth<\/a>, with several rows of stubby\u00a0teeth<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 the frontal ones roughly resembling\u00a0human teeth<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 which help crush the shells of prey.[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The sheepshead is found in coastal waters along the western Atlantic, from\u00a0Nova Scotia<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0Brazil<\/a>, but the greatest concentration is around southwest\u00a0Florida<\/a>.[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Although the\u00a0Sheepshead Bay<\/a>\u00a0section of\u00a0Brooklyn<\/a>, in\u00a0New York City<\/a>, was named after the fish,[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0it is now rarely found that far north.<\/p>\n

As sheepshead feed on bivalves and crustaceans,[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0successful baits include\u00a0shrimp<\/a>,\u00a0sand fleas<\/a>\u00a0(mole crabs),\u00a0clams<\/a>, fiddler crabs, and\u00a0mussels<\/a>.[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Sheepshead have a knack for stealing bait, so a small\u00a0hook<\/a>\u00a0is necessary.[5]<\/a><\/sup>Locating sheepshead with a boat is not difficult: Fishermen look for rocky bottoms or places with obstructions,\u00a0jetties<\/a>, and the pilings of\u00a0bridges<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0piers<\/a>.[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The average weight of a sheepshead is 1.4 to 1.8\u00a0kg (3 to 4\u00a0lb), but some individuals reach the range of 4.5 to 6.8\u00a0kg (10 to 15\u00a0lb).[5]\u00a0<\/a><\/sup><\/sup>Please see more information here.<\/a><\/p>\n
