It was originally assigned to the\u00a0<a title=\"Sciaenidae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sciaenidae\">sciaenid<\/a>\u00a0genus\u00a0<i><a title=\"Sciaena\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sciaena\">Sciaena<\/a>;<\/i>\u00a0<i>Sciaena undecimradiatus<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Centropomus undecimradiatus<\/i>\u00a0are obsolete synonyms for the species.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\u00a0One of the largest\u00a0<a title=\"Centropomidae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Centropomidae\">snooks<\/a>,\u00a0<i>Centropomus undecimalis<\/i>\u00a0grows to a maximum overall length of 140 centimeters (4.6\u00a0ft) but common length is 50 centimeters (1.6\u00a0ft).The IGFA world record is 24.32\u00a0kg (53\u00a0lb 10 oz) caught in Parismina Ranch, Costa Rica by an angler named Rafael Montalvo.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Common_snook#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Common_snook#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Of typical centropomid form, it possesses drab coloration except for a distinctive black\u00a0<a title=\"Lateral line\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lateral_line\">lateral line<\/a>. It is believed that during a great warming trend after the Ice Age, snook moved northward along the Mexico shoreline. They followed the perimeter of the Gulf of Mexico, down the west coast of Florida and up the east coast. The fishing is also renowned for sharks in the summer, tailing redfish on the bayside flats and snook under and off the Blind Pass bridge.
