It is one of the biggest coastal sharks in the world and is closely related to the\u00a0<a title=\"Dusky shark\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dusky_shark\">dusky shark<\/a>, the\u00a0<a title=\"Bignose shark\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bignose_shark\">bignose shark<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a title=\"Bull shark\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bull_shark\">bull shark<\/a>. Its\u00a0<a title=\"Dorsal fin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dorsal_fin\">dorsal fin<\/a>\u00a0is triangular and very high and it has very long\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Pectoral fins\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pectoral_fins\">pectoral fins<\/a>. Sandbar sharks usually have heavy-set bodies and rounded snouts that are shorter than the average shark&#8217;s snout. Their upper teeth have broadly uneven cusps with sharp edges. Its body color can vary from a bluish to a brownish grey to a bronze, with a white or pale underside. Sandbar sharks are found in tropical to temperate waters worldwide; in the western\u00a0<a title=\"Atlantic Ocean\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlantic_Ocean\">Atlantic<\/a>, they range from\u00a0Massachusetts to\u00a0<a title=\"Brazil\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brazil\">Brazil<\/a>. Thanksgiving 2012.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sandbar sharks have been disproportionately targeted by the U.S. commercial shark fisheries in recent decades due to their high fin-to-body weight ratio, and U.S. fishing regulation requiring carcasses to be landed along with shark fins. In 2008, the\u00a0<a title=\"National Marine Fisheries Service\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Marine_Fisheries_Service\">National Marine Fisheries Service<\/a>\u00a0banned all commercial landings of sandbar sharks based on a 2006 stock assessment by\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"SEDAR\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SEDAR\">SEDAR<\/a>, and sandbar sharks were listed as vulnerable, due to overfishing. Currently, there are a small number of specially permitted vessels fishing for sandbars sharks for the purpose of scientific research. The fishing is also renowned for sharks in the summer, tailing redfish on the bayside flats and snook under and off the Blind Pass bridge.
