They are commonly known as <strong>ladyfish<\/strong>, skipjacks, jack-rashes, or tenpounders.<\/p>\n<p>The ladyfish are a coastal-dwelling fish found throughout the tropical and subtropical regions, occasionally venturing into temperate waters.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elopidae#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Spawning\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spawning\">Spawning<\/a>\u00a0takes place at sea, and the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Fish larva\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fish_larva\">fish larvae<\/a>\u00a0migrate inland entering brackish waters. The body is fusiform (tapering spindle shape) and oval in cross-section; being slightly laterally compressed, and the eyes are large and partially covered with\u00a0<a title=\"Adipose eyelid\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adipose_eyelid\">adipose eyelids<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Like those of\u00a0<a title=\"Eel\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eel\">eels<\/a>, the larvae are\u00a0<a title=\"Leptocephalus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leptocephalus\">leptocephalic<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; being highly compressed, ribbon-like, and transparent. Whether you&#8217;re an avid fly fisherman or a die-hard live bait angler (live ladyfish make excellent baits for other fish), there is a lot of fun to be had catching Ladyfish. Here, their favorite food item is fish, such as anchovies, mullet, sardines, menhaden, but will also consume shrimp and other crustaceans when available. Stomach content studies often reveal over 90% of their diet being fish-based. The fishing is also renowned with sharks in the summer, tailing redfish on the bayside flats and snook under and off the Blind Pass bridge.
