It is common to coastal tropical and subtropical waters around the world, including\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Brackish\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brackish\">brackish<\/a>\u00a0habitats.\u00a0<a title=\"Genetics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Genetics\">Genetic analyses<\/a>\u00a0have revealed substantial variation within this species, with populations from the western\u00a0<a title=\"Atlantic Ocean\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlantic_Ocean\">Atlantic Ocean<\/a>\u00a0isolated and distinct from those in the rest of its range. The blacktip shark has a stout,\u00a0<a class=\"extiw\" title=\"wikt:fusiform\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/fusiform\">fusiform<\/a>\u00a0body with a pointed snout, long\u00a0<a title=\"Gill slit\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gill_slit\">gill slits<\/a>, and no ridge between the\u00a0<a title=\"Dorsal fin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dorsal_fin\">dorsal fins<\/a>. Most individuals have black tips or edges on the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Pectoral fin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pectoral_fin\">pectoral<\/a>, dorsal,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Pelvic fin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pelvic_fin\">pelvic<\/a>, and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Caudal fin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caudal_fin\">caudal fins<\/a>. Their demeanor has been described as &#8220;timid&#8221; compared to other large requiem sharks. Both juveniles and adults form groups of varying size. Like other members of its family, the blacktip shark is\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Viviparous\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Viviparous\">viviparous<\/a>; females bear one to 10 pups every other year. Young blacktip sharks spend the first months of their lives in shallow nurseries, and grown females return to the nurseries where they were born to give birth themselves. This species is of importance to both\u00a0<a title=\"Commercial fishing\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commercial_fishing\">commercial<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Recreational fishing\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Recreational_fishing\">recreational fisheries<\/a>\u00a0across many parts of its range, with its meat, skin, fins, and liver oil used.
