Other common names include\u00a0<b>black kingfish<\/b>,\u00a0<b>black salmon<\/b>,\u00a0<b>ling<\/b>,\u00a0<b>lemonfish<\/b>,\u00a0<b>crabeater<\/b>,\u00a0<b>prodigal son<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>black bonito<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Attaining a maximum length of 2 m (78\u00a0in) and a maximum weight of 78\u00a0kg (172\u00a0lb), the cobia has an elongated fusiform (spindle-shaped) body and a broad, flattened head. The eyes are small and the lower jaw projects slightly past the upper. It is dark brown in color, grading to white on the belly with two darker brown horizontal bands on the flanks. The stripes are more prominent during\u00a0<a title=\"Spawn (biology)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spawn_(biology)\">spawning<\/a> when they darken and the background color lightens.<\/p>\n<p>The cobia is normally solitary except for annual spawning aggregations, and sometimes it will congregate at\u00a0<a title=\"Reef\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reef\">reefs<\/a>, wrecks, harbors,\u00a0<a title=\"Buoy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Buoy\">buoys<\/a>, and other structural oases. It is also\u00a0<a title=\"Euryhaline\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Euryhaline\">euryhaline<\/a>, living at\u00a0<a title=\"Salinity\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salinity\">salinities<\/a>\u00a0of 5 to 44.5\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Per mil\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Per_mil\">ppt<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cobia#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The cobia feeds primarily on\u00a0<a title=\"Crab\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crab\">crabs<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Squid\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Squid\">squid<\/a>, and fish. It will follow larger animals such as\u00a0<a title=\"Shark\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shark\">sharks<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Turtle\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turtle\">turtles<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Manta ray\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manta_ray\">manta rays\u00a0<\/a>to\u00a0<a title=\"Scavenger\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scavenger\">scavenge<\/a>. The fishing is also renowned with sharks in the summer, tailing redfish on the bayside flats and snook under and off the Blind Pass bridge.
