Charlie, Cobia, Gulf Side Of Sanibel, Sanibel & Captiva Islands & Fort Myers Charters & Fishing Guide Service, Saturday, November 11, 2017, [File Photo – December 12, 2012].<\/figcaption><\/figure>\u201cThe\u00a0cobia<\/b>\u00a0(Rachycentron canadum<\/i>) is a species of\u00a0perciform<\/a>\u00a0marine<\/a>\u00a0fish<\/a>, the only representative of the genus\u00a0Rachycentron<\/b><\/i>\u00a0and the family\u00a0Rachycentridae<\/b>. Other common names include\u00a0black kingfish<\/b>,\u00a0black salmon<\/b>,\u00a0ling<\/b>,\u00a0lemonfish<\/b>,\u00a0crabeater<\/b>,\u00a0prodigal son<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0black bonito<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Attaining a maximum length of 2 m (78\u00a0in) and a maximum weight of 78\u00a0kg (172\u00a0lb), the cobia has an elongated fusiform (spindle-shaped) body and a broad, flattened head. The eyes are small and the lower jaw projects slightly past the upper. Fibrous villiform teeth line the jaws, the tongue, and the roof of the mouth.<\/p>\n

The body of the fish is smooth with small scales. It is dark brown in color, grading to white on the belly with two darker brown horizontal bands on the flanks. The stripes are more prominent during\u00a0spawning<\/a> when they darken and the background color lightens.<\/p>\n

The cobia is normally solitary except for annual spawning aggregations, and sometimes it will congregate at\u00a0reefs<\/a>, wrecks, harbors,\u00a0buoys<\/a>, and other structural oases. It is\u00a0pelagic<\/a>, but it may enter\u00a0estuaries<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0mangroves<\/a>\u00a0in search of prey.<\/p>\n

It is found in warm-temperate to tropical waters of the West and East\u00a0Atlantic Ocean<\/a>, throughout the\u00a0Caribbean<\/a>, and in the Indo-Pacific off India, Australia and Japan.[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It is\u00a0eurythermal<\/a>, tolerating a wide range of temperatures, from 1.6 to 32.2\u00a0\u00b0C. It is also\u00a0euryhaline<\/a>, living at\u00a0salinities<\/a>\u00a0of 5 to 44.5\u00a0ppt<\/a>.[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The cobia feeds primarily on\u00a0crabs<\/a>,\u00a0squid<\/a>, and fish. It will follow larger animals such as\u00a0sharks<\/a>,\u00a0turtles<\/a>, and\u00a0manta rays\u00a0<\/a>to\u00a0scavenge<\/a>. After a fierce storm, Turner Beach, the beach adjoining the Pass, is frequently covered with a bounty of shells from Olives to Fighting Whelks to the more common Conchs. The fishing is also renowned with sharks in the summer, tailing redfish on the bayside flats and snook under and off the Blind Pass bridge. Because Turner Beach faces Westward, the sunsets are spectacular and a popular viewing point for residents and visitors alike.<\/p>\n
