This species occurs in tropical and warm temperate waters worldwide, except for in the eastern\u00a0<a title=\"Pacific Ocean\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pacific_Ocean\">Pacific Ocean<\/a>. It is found from coastal to offshore habitats to a depth of 100\u00a0m (330\u00a0ft), though it prefers shallow water. The spinner shark resembles a larger version of the\u00a0<a title=\"Blacktip shark\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blacktip_shark\">blacktip shark<\/a>\u00a0(<i>C. limbatus<\/i>), with a slender body, long snout, and black-marked fins. This species can be distinguished from the blacktip shark by the first\u00a0<a title=\"Dorsal fin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dorsal_fin\">dorsal fin<\/a>, which has a different shape and is placed further back, and by the black tip on the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Anal fin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anal_fin\">anal fin<\/a>\u00a0(in adults only). When feeding on\u00a0<a title=\"Shoaling and schooling\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shoaling_and_schooling\">schools<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a title=\"Forage fish\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Forage_fish\">forage fish<\/a>, they will speed vertically through the school while spinning on their axis, erupting from the water at the end. Like other members of its family, the spinner shark is\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Viviparous\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Viviparous\">viviparous<\/a>, with females bearing litters of three to 20 young every other year. The newborns are born in shallow nursery areas near the coast and are relatively fast-growing. This species is not usually dangerous to humans but may become belligerent when excited by food. Spinner sharks are valued by\u00a0<a title=\"Commercial fishing\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commercial_fishing\">commercial fisheries<\/a>\u00a0across their range for their meat, fins,\u00a0<a title=\"Shark liver oil\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shark_liver_oil\">liver oil<\/a>, and skin. They are also esteemed as strong fighters by\u00a0<a title=\"Recreational fishing\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Recreational_fishing\">recreational fishers<\/a>. The fishing is also renowned with sharks in the summer, tailing redfish on the bayside flats and snook under and off the Blind Pass bridge.
