Captiva Fishing, Sanibel Island, Monday January 2, 2017.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;The <b>cobia<\/b> (<i>Rachycentron canadum<\/i>) is a species of <a title=\"Perciformes\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Perciformes\">perciform<\/a> <a title=\"Marine (ocean)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marine_(ocean)\">marine<\/a> <a title=\"Fish\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fish\">fish<\/a>, the only representative of the genus <i><b>Rachycentron<\/b><\/i> and the family <b>Rachycentridae<\/b>. Other common names include <b>black kingfish<\/b>, <b>black salmon<\/b>, <b>ling<\/b>, <b>lemonfish<\/b>, <b>crabeater<\/b>, the <b>prodigal son<\/b> and <b>black bonito<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Attaining a maximum length of 2 m (78\u00a0in) and a maximum weight of 78\u00a0kg (172\u00a0lb), the cobia has an elongated fusiform (spindle-shaped) body and a broad, flattened head. The eyes are small and the lower jaw projects slightly past the upper. Fibrous villiform teeth line the jaws, the tongue, and the roof of the mouth. The body of the fish is smooth with small scales. It is dark brown in color, grading to white on the belly with two darker brown horizontal bands on the flanks. The first dorsal fin has six to 9 independent, short, stout, sharp spines. The family name Rachycentridae, from the <a title=\"Greek language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greek_language\">Greek<\/a> words <i>rhachis<\/i> (&#8220;spine&#8221;) and <i>kentron<\/i> (&#8220;sting&#8221;), was inspired by these dorsal spines. The mature cobia has a forked, slightly lunated tail, which is usually dark brown. The juvenile cobia is patterned with conspicuous bands of black and white and has a rounded tail. The largest cobia taken on rod and reel came from <a title=\"Shark Bay\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shark_Bay\">Shark Bay, Australia<\/a>, and weighed 60\u00a0kg (135\u00a0lb).<\/p>\n<p>The cobia resembles its close relatives, the <a title=\"Remora\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Remora\">remoras<\/a> of the family Echeneidae. It is <a title=\"Pelagic zone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pelagic_zone\">pelagic<\/a>, but it may enter <a title=\"Estuary\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Estuary\">estuaries<\/a> and <a title=\"Mangrove\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mangrove\">mangroves<\/a> in search of prey.<\/p>\n<p>It is found in warm-temperate to tropical waters of the West and East <a title=\"Atlantic Ocean\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlantic_Ocean\">Atlantic Ocean<\/a>, throughout the <a title=\"Caribbean\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caribbean\">Caribbean<\/a>, and in the Indo-Pacific off India, Australia and Japan.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cobia#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> It is <a title=\"Eurytherm\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eurytherm\">eurythermal<\/a>, tolerating a wide range of temperatures, from 1.6 to 32.2\u00a0\u00b0C. It will follow larger animals such as <a title=\"Shark\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shark\">sharks<\/a>, <a title=\"Turtle\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turtle\">turtles<\/a>, and <a title=\"Manta ray\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manta_ray\">manta rays<\/a> to <a title=\"Scavenger\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scavenger\">scavenge<\/a>. The eggs float freely with the currents until hatching. Both sexes lead moderately long lives of 15 years or more. In <a title=\"Taiwan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taiwan\">Taiwan<\/a>, cobia of 100 to 600 g are cultured for 1.0 to 1.5 years until they reach 6 to 8\u00a0kg. They are then exported to Japan, China, North America, and Europe.
