The spiny first <a title=\"Dorsal fin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dorsal_fin\">dorsal fin<\/a> is normally folded back in a groove, as are its <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Pectoral fin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pectoral_fin\">pectoral fins<\/a>. Coloration is a grayish blue-green dorsally, fading to white on the lower sides and belly. Its single row of teeth in each jaw is uniform in size, knife-edged, and sharp. They are found in <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Pelagic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pelagic\">pelagic<\/a> waters on much of the continental shelves along eastern America (though not between south Florida and northern South America), Africa, the Mediterranean and Black Seas (and during migration in between), Southeast Asia, and Australia. By April, they have disappeared, heading north. By June, they may be found off <a title=\"Massachusetts\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Massachusetts\">Massachusetts<\/a>; in years of high abundance, stragglers may be found as far north as <a title=\"Nova Scotia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nova_Scotia\">Nova Scotia<\/a>. By October, they leave the waters north of New York City, heading south (whereas some bluefish, perhaps less migratory,<sup id=\"cite_ref-10\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bluefish#cite_note-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-11\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bluefish#cite_note-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup> are present in the Gulf of Mexico throughout the year). As with most marine fish, their spawning habits are not well known. In the western side of the North Atlantic, at least two populations occur, separated by <a title=\"Cape Hatteras\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cape_Hatteras\">Cape Hatteras<\/a> in <a title=\"North Carolina\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_Carolina\">North Carolina<\/a>. They are fast swimmers which prey on <a title=\"Shoaling and schooling\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shoaling_and_schooling\">schools<\/a> of <a title=\"Forage fish\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Forage_fish\">forage fish<\/a> and continue attacking them in <a title=\"Feeding frenzy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Feeding_frenzy\">feeding frenzies<\/a> even after they appear to have eaten their fill.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FishBase_8-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bluefish#cite_note-FishBase-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-FAO_9-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bluefish#cite_note-FAO-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup> Depending on area and season, they favor <a title=\"Menhaden\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Menhaden\">menhaden<\/a> and other <a title=\"Sardine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sardine\">sardine<\/a>-like fish (<a title=\"Clupeidae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clupeidae\">Clupeidae<\/a>), jacks (<a title=\"Scombridae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scombridae\">Scombridae<\/a>), <a title=\"Weakfish\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Weakfish\">weakfish<\/a> (<a title=\"Sciaenidae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sciaenidae\">Sciaenidae<\/a>), grunts (<a title=\"Haemulidae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haemulidae\">Haemulidae<\/a>), striped anchovies (<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Engraulidae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Engraulidae\">Engraulidae<\/a>), <a title=\"Shrimp\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shrimp\">shrimp<\/a>, and <a title=\"Squid\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Squid\">squid<\/a>. They are <a title=\"Cannibalism (zoology)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cannibalism_(zoology)\">cannibalistic<\/a> and can destroy their own young.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Schultz_17-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bluefish#cite_note-Schultz-17\">[17]<\/a><\/sup> Bluefish sometimes chase bait through the <a title=\"Surf zone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Surf_zone\">surf zone<\/a>, attacking schools in very shallow water, churning the water like a washing machine. This behavior is sometimes referred to as a &#8220;bluefish blitz&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In turn, bluefish are preyed upon by larger predators at all stages of their lifecycle. As juveniles, they fall victim to a wide variety of oceanic predators, including striped bass, larger bluefish, fluke (summer flounder), weakfish, tuna, sharks, rays, and dolphins. Fishermen have been severely bitten, and wearing gloves can help. Wading or swimming among feeding bluefish schools can be dangerous.<sup id=\"cite_ref-18\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bluefish#cite_note-18\">[18]<\/a><\/sup> In July 2006, a seven-year-old girl was attacked on a beach, near the Spanish town of <a title=\"Alicante\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alicante\">Alicante<\/a>, allegedly by a bluefish.<sup id=\"cite_ref-19\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bluefish#cite_note-19\">[19]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Bluefish are highly sought-after sportfish (and restaurant fish in some places) that had been widely overfished across the world&#8217;s fisheries.<sup id=\"cite_ref-24\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bluefish#cite_note-24\">[24]<\/a><\/sup> Restrictions set forth by management organizations have somewhat helped the species&#8217; population stabilize.
