Dave Jensen, the longtime fixture and leader of Captiva Island, Florida, died suddenly this week in Italy.

Red and Betty Jensen, Dave’s parents, moved the family from Wisconsin to Captiva nearly fifty years ago and acquired, built, and ran Jensen’s on the Gulf and Jensen’s Twin Palm Cottages & Marina Resort.

It is not a stretch to say Dave and his family led the rebuilding of Captiva Island after Hurricane Charley in 2004.  Dave was tireless and inspirational in his resilience and spirit.  He was the core and center of Captiva Island.

At Dave’s final Captiva Community Panel meeting last fall, David Mintz said it best, “Dave, you, as a person, are an institution. Your personality, smile, and bicycle, and wave are so characteristic of what this island is. If we ever had to rename the island it is Jensen.”

Dave is survived by Queenie Viglione, his wife, and long-time and devoted life partner, his brothers, and his sister.  Dave and Queenie had been living in Italy.
